A Community Orientation

Returning and new staff go through an orientation at the beginning of the school year. This includes visits to student homes. field trips through the community, building teamwork through ropes course, training, etc.

Accountability for Attendance

Although school attendance is mandatory in all states, students at the high school level often develop the habit of "skipping school" or "cutting classes".  A proactive attendance policy that is well communicated to students and parents with the consequences for non-compliance outlined must be established.

Incentive Program

Incentives, rewards, or awards to motivate and recognize student growth and achievement. A planned program that also recognizes parents, volunteers, mentors, teachers, etc.

Individualized Graduation Plans (IGP)

An IGP is a roadmap that guides high school students toward their higher education, career, or future employment goals.

Provide a Life Skills Class

A life skills class helps to encourage students to develop healthy habits to support learnng and growth. This will develop in students the ability to change what they can change and learn coping strategies for those they can not change. 

Recruitment and Matching

Match business people with students with the same interests. 

School and Community Partnerships

A partnership is a relationship between community members and the school. This may involve monitoring students as in juvenile court, social services, mental health, etc. A partnership may also include providing internships for students in local businesses and providing incentives from local businesses for attendance, behaviorial, or academic progress.

Senior Year Support

As students enter their senior year, potential road blocks may impact the student's chances of graduating. There needs to be an awareness of this possibility and a structure in place to support such students. These roadblocks may involve lack of needed credits, attendance issues, financial concerns, pregnancy, increased stress due to college goals, leaving home, adulthood, etc.

Staff Collaboration

Time is provided regularly for faculty and staff to meet and share information regarding curriculum, best practices, instructional strategies,as well as classroom management and discipline.

Startup and Ongoing Training

This is the definition for Startup and Ongoing training as it relates to Mentoring/Tutoring.

Student Internships

A student internship provides opportunities for students to gain job skills and experience while putting their academic skills to a relevant use.

Student/Teacher Relationships

Relationship building is paramount to improving student achievement especially among at-risk students.  This involves a commitment of time on the part of the teachers as they build trust with students, as they encourage, help with academic difficulties, and model  positive and acceptable behaviors.  

Use of Data

Information, often in the form of facts or figures obtained from various sources, is used as a basis for making calculations or drawing conclusions.
